Ocean Shield at Port Jackson

A bizarre looking ship came for a short visit yesterday.

It looks much bigger when sailing towards you and it is all front with just a flat bed at the back.  It arrived, reversed into Port Jackson, which you can see on the map, and, a little while later, steamed out again to go and visit other parts of the inner harbour.

The vessel is ADV Ocean Shield, the newest vessel of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Its main role is to support humanitarian and disaster relief operations but it can also patrol the Southern Ocean because it can operate in sub-Antarctic weather conditions.
